Typhoon Kaemi to hit Fujian on Tuesday noon (Xinhua) Updated: 2006-07-25 13:40
Typhoon Kaemi, the fifth of the year, is to land on east China's Fujian
Province between Xiamen and Fuqing at noon or at dusk on Tuesday, local
meteorologists forecast.
At 5:00 on Tuesday morning, Kaemi was located at
latitude 23.4 north and longitude 119.9 east along the coast of Chia Yi of
Taiwan and 210 kilometers southeast of Fujian's Jinjiang. It is moving
northwesterly with a speed of 20 kilometers per hour. The force 13 wind near its
center has a speed of 40 meters per second.
The meterologists said there
is now fresh gale or whole gale (force 8-10)on the Fujian coast.
They
added that from Tuesday to Wednesday, moderate to heavy rain will sweep the
province, with rainstorm in some counties.
Typhoon Bilis, the fourth of
the year, has so far claimed more than 600 lives in Fujian, Jiangxi, Hunan and
Guangdong provinces and the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
Drawing on
the lesson of Bilis, local governments are taking measures to call back
fishermen on the sea, check and protect reservoirs, monitor natural disasters
like floods and landslides, and arrange evacuation of people in dangerous areas
to safe places.
Three thousand armed police have been stationed in
Fujian, ready to launch rescue and relief operations when Typhoon Kaemi hits.
