HK universities attractive to Chinese students (CRIENGLISH.com) Updated: 2006-07-27 15:59 In order to attract more top
students from the mainland, the University of Hong Kong is offering 50 million
Hong Kong Dollars in scholarships this year, a record amount. Students from
China are displaying a greater interest in studying at universities in Hong
Kong.
The phenomenon has brought many different opinions to light. The People's
Daily quotes some as arguing what Hong Kong universities are offering is causing
great competition for mainland universities to attract top students.
If this is the case, the paper asks, should student recruitment and the loan
system of mainland universities adjust themselves in order to fit into the
current changes?
An official from the Chinese Ministry of Education, Wang Xuming, answers that
universities in Hong Kong does provide students from the mainland with bigger
opportunities. Moreover, they have helped with the future development of both
mainland and Hong Kong universities.
Accoring to the newspaper, although some new issues have been raised in this
year's student recruitment process, higher education institutions in China have
already started working on these issues in order to find ways to attract top
students to this newly developed competitive system.
