Ex-convict becomes prison employee

Chen Fanglin, who was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve 14 years ago, was recently employed by Qiongshan Prison in Hainan Province.

Chen, 42, who was jailed because of murder, won honour five times and was given rewards 10 times while serving his jail term.

Meanwhile he taught himself how to use a computer and English in the prison.

With help from Chen's technological innovations, the prison successfully saved more than 1 million yuan (US$125,000).

Chen, a college graduate, frequently helped the prison repair household appliances and other machines.

Now, Chen has become an IT employee in the prison, earning more than 2,500 yuan (US$312.5) a month. He has become the first person to be employed by the prison after being released.
