TAIPEI - A bus carrying Chinese tourists fell from a mountain road into
a deep valley in central Taiwan on Monday, killing six and injuring 14 others,
police said.
The bus was probably speeding when it skidded off the highway and fell into
the 10-meter (33-foot) -deep valley in Nantou county, police said.
Television footage showed rescuers pulling the injured from an overturned
double-decker bus and placing them on stretchers.
The tourists were returning from visiting nearby scenic Mount Ali, police
said. The injured were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of fractures and
bruises, they said.
"We were lucky that the bus did not fall from a steeper point," an
unidentified Chinese man told the TVBS Cable News from a hospital bed, adding
that he heard the bus driver talk about problems with the brake before the
accident occurred.
"State radio" said the tourists came from Liaoning province in northeastern
China.
