HONG KONG -- Hong Kong launches a two-week long campaign Sunday to remind
drivers of public service vehicles and goods vehicles of the importance of safe
driving.
The campaign includes both publicity on safe driving and
enforcement against traffic offenses. During the first week, Police officers
will distribute publicity leaflets to drivers as well as members of the public.
The public will also be encouraged to report undesirable driving behavior to the
Police or the Transport Complaints Unit of the Transport Advisory Committee.
Stringent enforcement action will be taken in the following week against
offenses including speeding, failing to comply with traffic signals, careless
and dangerous driving, using a handhold mobile phone while driving and seat
belt-related offenses.
According to Police figures, in the first nine
months of this year, there were 10,991 traffic accidents involving casualties, a
decrease of 1.5 percent when compared with the same period last
year.
