BEIJING -- The wife of Taichung Mayor Jason C. Hu, Shaw Hsiao-ling, who was severely injured in a car crash, is in a stable condition, according to a Taiwan hospital Monday.

The hospital said Shaw's condition took a favorable turn after her condition was listed as out of danger last week.

She could open her eyes and responded to sound, according to the doctors.

Hu was also making a good recovery and was working on documents in the ward, a local official said.

The couple and two aides were injured in a car crash on November 18 as they were returning to Taichung after supporting the Kuomintang Party opposition candidate Huang Chun-ying at an election rally.

Hu is campaigning for mayor in the southern city of Kaosiung.

He suffered slight injuries to his head and hands, but Shaw was thrown from the car and trapped under the overturned vehicle, according to local media.

Doctors amputated Shaw's forearm and removed her spleen during emergency surgery.
