An 18-year-old student who stabbed a schoolmate to death a year ago was sentenced to 29 years in jail by a High Court judge after the jury found him guilty of murder in the first degree last week.

The court heard that the defendant was doing community service for theft when he killed the victim with a pocket knife in Hong Kong's Quarry Bay Park on December 7 last year.

He did not tell police why he committed the crime but led them to where he had thrown away the murder weapon.

A judge postponed sentencing last year to collect more background information on the defendant because he was still a minor at the time.
