Two hundred local elementary and middle schools have signed up for a campaign to reduce waste and support recycling during the holiday season organized by an environmental group.

The non-governmental organization Environmental Sense said it expected 110,000 students and teachers to take part in the "green" drive.

It estimated that close to 8,000 boxes of food and 340,000 disposable containers could be saved during the holiday season.

Some students said they would ask classmates their preferences before packing lunches for Christmas pot-luck.

Others said they would reuse wrapping paper or wrap gifts in magazine pages.
