Five workers died yesterday from a fire in a power generation plant in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, leaving another five injured.

The accident happened around 1pm when workers were pouring concrete to build a chimney at Datang International Power Generation Co in Tuoketuo County of the region, Xinhua News Agency reported.

The initial investigation showed that the workers wrapped the chimney with quilts and then started a fire on the construction site to dry it quicker, but the quilts caught fire.

The workers were trying to finish the chimney faster, according to a local public security bureau today.

Datang Power is a large Chinese coal fired power producer listed in Hong Kong.
