Hong Kong joins mainland in seafood caution
(China Daily) Updated: 2007-01-11 08:53 Medical experts have warned
local residents not to eat uncooked or under-cooked seafood this winter,
particularly when they travel to foreign countries such as Japan, where about 3
million people have suffered from gastro-intestinal infections caused by the
Norwalk virus this year.
Following the public warning by the Ministry of Health earlier this week, a
Hong Kong expert on infectious diseases, was quoted last Wednesday as echoing
the same caution against raw seafood consumption by anyone planning to visit
Japan in the coming weeks. He said a new strain of the Norwalk virus had
appeared late last year, and the human immune system had yet to mount an
effective defense again it.
