Marriage for residency: Can you feel the love?(China Daily)Updated: 2007-01-15 08:44 A couple will spend their "honeymoon" in a Hong Kong jail after they were convicted for their marriage-for-residency scam. The husband, a 37-year-old mainlander, raised the suspicion of an immigration officer when he went to visit his 36-year-old wife in Hong Kong. After investigation, the man admitted he had paid the woman HK$50,000 ($6,400) to marry him so he could eventually become a permanent resident of Hong Kong. He'll spend 21 months behind bars for the scam and for lying to immigration officers. The wife confessed to have married previously for a similar deal and received a 12-month jail term.
