Red shoes and an orange coat will be the uniform for two fire investigation dogs that will assume their posts at the Fire Services Department of Hong Kong next month.

Dexter and Sasha, both Labrador retrievers trained in the United Kingdom, are 1 year old and will serve about six years.

After they were bought with HK$42,000 ($5,380) in September, 60 firemen have applied to be their handlers.

Two senior inspectors, dog lovers with 15 and 14 years' experience keeping dogs, were selected.

Dogs don't like shoes but Dexter and Sasha have to wear them because the floors are hot, and there is debris such as nails and broken glass at fire sites, said a handler.
