China plans to maintain the area it uses for growing grain at not less than 105 million hectares and increase grain output per acre.

The plans are outlined in the new agricultural guideline recently released by the central government. The document also emphasized the need to introduce new varieties of grain and improve the quality of the crop.

The document also called for more efforts to boost the development in the main grain-producing areas and more support for the grain processing industry.

It also underlined the importance of constructing new infrastructure for irrigation and improving the harvest produced by farmland with medium to low yields in the main grain producing areas.

China's grain output exceeded 490 million tons last year, around 6 million tons more than 2005.
