A Chinese national company signed in Kuwait City Tuesday a deal with Kuwait to help building the kingdom's Boubyan Island into a new city.

The deal for Boubyan port project was signed between the Kuwaiti Ministry of Public Works and the China Harbor Engineering Company.

After signing the deal, Kuwaiti Minister of Public Works Moussa al-Sarraf noted that the deal is the first part of a three-phase blueprint to build the country's Boubyan Island into a new city on the sea, which includes sea port, residential district as well as natural reserves.

According to the official, the first phase project includes a 35 km long three-lane bridge, railway, road and ground improvement and its total amount is worth about 400 million U.S. dollars and is expected to be finished in 42 months.

It is said to be the largest project Chinese companies have won in the Kuwaiti market in recent years.

Attending the signing ceremony, China's Deputy Minister for Transportation Feng Zhenglin voiced his hope that China would become an active participant in Kuwait's construction and contribute to its booming economic development.

Located to the northeast of Kuwait City, Boubyan Island is the largest island of Kuwait, extending to 40 km with a width of 25-35 km.
