HK students to celebrate in SZ SHENZHEN: About 4,500 Hong Kong students, aged from 16 to 18, will cross the border on Sunday to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the special administrative region with their counterparts in Shenzhen. The event will be sponsored by Hong Kong SAR Government and Shenzhen Municipal Government. It will be the largest-ever assembly of the teenagers of the two bordering cities since the reunification of Hong Kong in 1997. About 10,000 students are expected to participate, Zhang Wen, deputy secretary-general of the city's Communist Youth League, told a press briefing yesterday. "It will be a great opportunity for Hong Kong students to have a deeper understanding of mainland cities and for teenagers from both sides to have an active information exchanges," Zhang said. For about 1,000 visiting Hong Kong students, it will be completely a new experience since they will set foot on the mainland for the first time. The first group of 2,300 Hong Kong youth will arrive in Shenzhen in 50 buses on the morning of July 1 and visit several special venues of the city, including Shenzhen Museum, the training base of the armed police, Shenzhen High-tech Park, Book City and Shenzhen University, in five groups. The rest 2,000 will join them in the afternoon and set off to two entertainment venues of the city, Window of World and Happy Valley, in two groups, where they will sign their names for 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, 2011 summer Universade in Shenzhen and for the prosperity of Hong Kong and the nation. The students from Shenzhen and Hong Kong will also attend a series of competitions in street dance, cosplay, fashion show, karate, taekwondo and fence-play. The event will come to an end with a splendid evening performance that will be attended by a group of popular singers and performers from Hong Kong and the mainland. (HK Edition 06/26/2007 page6) |
