Five die in flood rampage in S. China(Xinhua)
Updated: 2007-08-20 08:52 GUANGZHOU -- The flooding that ravaged south China's Guangdong Province has claimed at least five lives in Zhanjiang City, and caused the missing of eight others, local officials said Sunday. The remains of the dead were found by last Friday in townships of Jijiazhen and Beihezhen of the city, the official sources said. Tropical storms Pabuk and Wutip brought torrential rains to the province between August 10 and 12, resulting in flooding which affected about 1.2 million people, destroying more than 3,000 houses and causing damage worth 1.34 billion yuan. The torrential rain distorted rails at 33 locations on a 70-km section of a major railway linking Guangdong and island province of Hainan, leading to its closure for 66 hours. |
