Updated: 2007-08-21 15:55 HONG KONG -- The US Navy's nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Nimitz and five other ships of the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group arrived in Hong Kong Monday morning for a scheduled port visit.
"Hong Kong is a favorite place for our sailors to visit," said Rear Admiral Terry Blake, commander of the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group. "The crews always enjoy opportunities to visit the city and experience its culture." During its scheduled port visit, about 5,000 crews of the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group will have the chance to experience local customs and traditions in Hong Kong, Blake said. The ships that arrived in Hong Kong with USS Nimitz included the guided-missile destroyers USS John Paul Jones, USS Chafee, USS Pinckney and USS Higgins as well as the guided-missle cruiser USS Pinceton. The USS Nimitz is the US Navy's first Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and was commissioned in May 1975. |
