BEIJING -- A State Council executive meeting presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao on Wednesday called for intensified efforts to ensure safe production and mass gathering safety to prevent fatal accidents.

The occurrence of serious accidents recently had sounded alarm bells for different levels of safety management authorities, a statement said, requiring local governments and enterprises step up safety control measures and establish effective warning systems.

The statement said rules and regulations on work place safety should be improved.

The draft regulation on mass gathering safety management was approved in principle, and would be further amended before being enacted by the State Council, it said.

Several fatal mass accidents happened in August, including a bridge collapse in central China's Hunan Province which killed 64 people.

The State Council expressed deep condolence for all victims and their families.
