HONG KONG - The special administrative region government of Hong Kong on Tuesday announced that it was holding a competition to seek for logos and slogans that could best convey the benefits of a Wi-Fi promoting initiative.

"Creative minds are now invited to come up with a representative logo and slogans that help convey the benefits of the government Wi-Fi program," the Information Services Department and the office of the government chief information officer said, referring to GovWi-Fi, the project aimed at turning Hong Kong into a wireless city.

Under the program, the SAR government of Hong Kong, dubbed China's world city, would progressively provide Wi-Fi facilities from March 2008 to June 2009 at about 350 government premises throughout the Chinese territory for free use by the public.

All Hong Kong identity-card holders aged 11 or above could enter either the logo design or the slogan creation parts of the competition, or both. They may submit up to 3 designs for each part of the competition with a deadline of January 25, 2008.

A judging panel would evaluate the works, based on the principle that they should best express the theme and idea of the GovWi-Fi program, aside from their aesthetic level, creativity and suitability for printing as a visible sign and onto souvenirs.

Winners would receive gift coupons and their winning entries may be displayed on relevant publicity materials and hotspot locations of the GovWi-Fi such as libraries, inquiry centers, cultural centers, community halls, government offices and parks.

Hong Kong has recently been promoting the development of creative industries heavily in hope of cultivating support industries alongside the pillars of financial services and properties, with government-sponsored activities like the innovation festival.

Donald Tsang, Chief Executive of Hong Kong SAR, set the goal of developing Hong Kong into a creative capital in his policy address recently after winning a second term as chief executive of the SAR.

Intended to improve the interoperability of local wireless networks products, Wi-Fi or wireless fidelity, is a wireless technology brand owned by the Wi-Fi Alliance, a consortium of separate and independent companies agreeing to a set of common standards. Its applications include internet, VoIP phone access, gaming and network.
