Hsieh Chang-ting on Monday took the post of acting chairman of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Taiwan's ruling party, which suffered a crushing defeat in Saturday's "legislature" elections.

Chen Shui-bian resigned from his post as DPP chairman on Saturday evening after the party only won 27 of the total 113 seats. Kuomintang (KMT), the main opposition party, won 81 seats.

Hsieh is the DPP's candidate for the 2008 Taiwan leader election.
