 The Dalai Lama left Tibet for Beijing for the first time in 1954. He met with Chairman Mao Zedong and took part in the first National People's Congress in Beijing. The Dala Lama wrote a poem praising Chairman Mao's accomplishments. After the NPC meeting the Dalai Lama spent several months touring the country before returning to Tibet.
