Tibetan separatists surrounded Lhasa and killed some residents for independence in 1959. Shortly afterwards, the Dalai Lama fled to southern Tibet, he and his diehard separatist followers declared independence and then fled to India. Then a massive uprising erupted in Lhasa that was later crushed in two days.
