XI'AN  -- The death toll in northwest China's Shaanxi Province from Monday's earthquake has risen to 103, up from 92, local authorities said on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, 893 people were injured and 9 million people evacuated, the provincial department of civil affairs said. The earthquake also damaged almost 310,000 houses.

The provincial government has allocated 5.7 million yuan (814,286 US dollars) for disaster relief and sent 4,100 tents and 10,000 quilts to the quake-hit areas.

The 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Wenchuan County of southwest China's Sichuan Province at 2:28 p.m. Monday. It was the worst to strike China since the Tangshan earthquake in northern Hebei Province in 1976, which claimed 242,000 lives.

The death toll from the quake in Sichuan has exceeded 12,000 and is still rising, Li Chengyun, vice provincial governor, told a news conference on Tuesday.

He said another 26,206 people were injured and 9,404 people are buried in debris.
