MACAO -- The Macao Red Cross announced Friday that it plans to donate over 40 million patacas (about $5 million) for the post-quake reconstruction of Sichuan province.
The organization said they have delivered 5,000 tents, nearly 1, 600 inflatable mattresses and 64 mobile toilets to five quake- stricken areas in Sichuan, which were all transported by trucks through a point-to-point green-channel roadway that was established with the assistance from the Sichuan provincial government.
As for the next phase of their work, Wang Yue Kai, board chairman of the organization, said they will allocate funds to assist the rebuilding of schools, hospitals and community facilities in the quake-hit areas.
Aside from cash donations, Macao has sent a medical team to assist the work at a hospital in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan. The team returned to Macao on Tuesday and the team members said there still are a lot of victims there who need help.
Dr. Lee Choi Chu, a member of medical crew, said the hospitals at Chengdu could not accommodate all the injured victims, and many of these people are still suffering from the trauma of the disaster.
She called upon local citizens to continue their support to the relief work in Sichuan, as the rebuilding process there will take a relatively long time.
