Overseas-funded companies donate 3.6B yuan

BEIJING - China has received 3.6 billion yuan (US$ 514.3 million) in cash and goods for earthquake relief from foreign-funded enterprises, multinationals and businesses with investment from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan as of Thursday.

China's Ministry of Commerce said on Friday that these included 3.026 billion yuan in cash and 614 million yuan worth of relief materials.

Some of the enterprises also promised to donate another 243 million yuan, both in cash and relief materials, over the next few days.

The 8.0-magnitude quake, centered in Wenchuan County in Sichuan Province, had claimed 69,130 lives nationwide as of Friday noon, while 374,031 were injured and 17,824 were missing.

Domestic and foreign donations had reached 43.806 billion yuan as of Friday noon, up 42 million yuan overnight.

The government has allocated 23.215 billion yuan for quake relief efforts. The funding included 18.699 billion yuan from the central budget and 4.516 billion yuan from local budgets.
