NANJING - Three of the 29 children injured in a knife attack at a kindergarten in east China's Jiangsu Province on April 29 are still under intensive care in a hospital, a local government spokesman said Friday.

"Two of the three children still in a critical condition had their throats slashed. The other suffered a lung injury," said Taixing City government spokesman Zhu Guiming.

Two other children who were slightly injured have recovered and are expected to leave the hospital soon, he added.

Police have detained a suspect for breaking into a classroom at the Zhongxin Kindergarten, wielding a 20 cm long knife, and attacking the children, two teachers and a kindergarten security guard.

Jiang Yuegui, deputy director of the kindergarten, said two counselors are working at the kindergarten to provide psychological support.

"The psychological counselling has focused on the small number of children who witnessed the attack. Many parents have also come seeking professional advice on how to explain the attack to their children to allay their fears," Jiang said.

Jiang added all the kindergarten's children were covered by insurance policies, and that the insurance company is currently settling the claims.

Jiang Wenxiang, chief of the Taixing Police, said police have beefed up kindergarten security and employed more security guards for kindergartens.

He said the suspect, Xu Yuyuan, a 47-year-old local man, has been charged with murder by the local procuratorate.
