The Higher People's Court in Central China's Henan province declared May 9 "Wrong Case Awareness Day," after a high-profile case of a wrongly convicted man in prison for 11 years.
Zhang Liyong, head of the province's Higher People's Court, admitted that the court was mainly responsible for the case.
"The connivance of the court led to the torture to extract confessions during interrogation."
He also said that the damage will be long, the consequence painful, and it couldn’t be repaired in the short term.
A villager named Zhao Zuohai was wrongly identified as a murderer and spent 11 years in prison. The 58-year-old man received 650,000 yuan ($95,588) as compensation from the government when he was set free on May 9.
