An international machine tool fair is scheduled to open at the Shanghai New International Expo Center on July 15.

The four-day event sponsored by Defense Industry Council Information Center, China Social and Economic Survey Center and the Eastpo International Expo Co. Ltd aims to push forward the country's industries in national defense, aviation and space, rail traffic, and auto manufacturing and shipping, said Gao Yuxiao, a spokeswoman from the Eastpo.

More than 1000 machine tool manufacturers from home and abroad, including Verk from Sweden, Yamazak Mazak, Mitsubishi and OKK from Japan, and Mikron from Switzerland, will attend the fair to display the latest machine tool technologies and products, Gao said.

Machine tool insiders said this large-scale fair will surely become a stimulus to China's machine tool industry which was hit by the global financial crisis last year.

"The industry lingered in the first half of last year due to the crisis, with profits going down sharply," she said. "After one year of effort, it has gradually gone out of the dilemma to witness a recovery with sales at the first half of this year reaching 96.8 percent."

According to Gao, China's fast economic growth has called for a growing need of digitally-controlled machine tools. And the demand is mainly caused by the emergence of many private enterprises, which need a large number of new machine tools.

During the fair, sponsors will hold more than 30 seminars to discuss ways of applying advanced technologies to industries in national defence, aviation and space, high-speed train and auto manufacture.
