In an interview with Hong Kong-based Phoenix Satellite TV, the director says progress will be slow in making many compromises.
“Wang Zhongjun, as the investor, has his own concerns, the local government of Tangshan has its concerns, The Film Bureau has its concerns, and we directors have our concerns too. How can I take care of all these concerns to produce a film? ”
He added that “I think I have successfully balanced all those concerns. Even I am not capable of being a Party Chief at province level, I am qualified at the county level.”
At least 240,000 people perished in Tangshan, in North China’s Hebei province, when it was hit by a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck on July 28, 1976. The film has raked in 400 million yuan (US$58.6 million) in the Chinese mainland as of Sunday August 1, the distributors announced.
