The forum, part of the Overseas Chinese World Conference for Promoting Peaceful Reunification of China which opened earlier in the day, invited 10 keynote speakers from Hong Kong and Taiwan to share their views with some 200 audience on subjects including cross-strait relations.

Lin Shaowu, a postgraduate from Taiwan's Chung Hsing University, said in his speech that pushing the cross-strait cultural exchange was beneficial to both sides, in which people could achieve better understanding of each other and thus eliminate misunderstanding.

Lin was agreed by his fellow representative Sun Yi Lun. "No matter what the political situation is, and no matter how loud some Taiwan separatists may shout, people in Taiwan and Chinese mainland were born with same language, culture and race, sharing same history, all of which could not be rewritten," said Sun.

Speaking of Taiwan's recently adopted open-door policy to Chinese mainland students, he said direct exchanges will lead to mutual trust, which will in turn bring forth eternal peace and development.

Among four Hong Kong speakers, Geng Chunya, who came to work and reside after Hong Kong's return to Chinese rule in 1997, said Hong Kong could play a positive role in cross-strait exchanges and cooperation which was the only way for future development of cross- strait relations.
