Overseas Chinese, including those from Hong Kong and Macao, have donated more than 45 billion yuan ($6.8 billion) in charity to Guangdong province since 1978, a contribution of about 60 percent of the nation's overseas donations, sources with the Guangdong Overseas Chinese Affairs Office said.

The office, in collaboration with Guangzhou-based Southern Television, held a charity event on Friday to present awards to the top 10 overseas Chinese people, including sports celebrities Lang Ping and Xie Xingfang, for their charitable contributions to the province's social and economic development over the past three decades.
