The sentence was given to him by the Shandong Provincial Higher People's Court at his second trial on Dec 3, the paper said. He was sentenced to death at his first trial in April for the corruption charges, in addition to illegal land investments.
He was charged with taking bribes of 21.87 million yuan ($3.31 million) from companies and individuals, and embezzling 16.5 million yuan in public funds from 1999 to 2008.
The court said at his second trial that Chen got a two-year reprieve because he confessed truthfully and all the illicit money was returned.
