The tour bus, heading Beihai City in the neighboring Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region rear-ended the road maintainer at around 8:10 am Thursday, one hour after it took the road from Guangzhou, capital city of Guangdong, a spokesman with the highway's traffic control office said.

The bus driver and a tour guide died on the spot while three tourists and two workers aboard the maintenance vehicle were severely hurt, he said.

The others were only slightly injured, he added.

An investigation into the cause of the accident is under way and tourists on the bus said possible fatigue driving might have caused the collision.
