BEIJING - Chinese authorities destroyed more than 4,440 gang-related organizations and nabbed some 28,000 criminal suspects last year as the country strengthened its efforts to crack down on gang crimes.
The suspects were said to have been involved in more than 37,000 criminal cases, according to figures revealed Monday at a national meeting on gang crackdown.
"Various departments across the country should stand alert and make active and long-term efforts to prevent gang-creation," said a statement released after the meeting.
According to the statement, the country's anti-gang forces will be focused on major gang-related groups which monopolize business and interrupt economic order in key industries.
Gangs that bully civilians and harm grass-roots governmental rulings will also be harshly dealt with, the statement added.
Officials from the Supreme People's Court, Ministry of Public Security, People's Bank of China and other Party and government organs attended the meeting.
