The fire, boosted by strong winds, moved toward Mount Tai after it broke out in the mountainous area near Shandong's capital city of Jinan around 9 am Monday, forcing the evacuation of 1,000 villagers.
More than 17,000 people were mobilized to help extinguish the fire, said the firefighting authorities.
Mount Tai, one of China's Five Sacred Mountains, holds great historical and cultural significance. Its peak, referred to as the "Jade Emperor Peak" is approximately 1,500 meters above sea level.
