China has launched a crackdown on piracy to regulate the market and protect intellectual property rights (IPR), said Jiang Jianguo, deputy director of General Administration of Press and Publication, during a ceremony to toast "Green Bookmark Action 2011" .

"Piracy will not only hurt the copyright owners and the children, but also the nation's innovation and future," Jiang said.

He called for the creation of a new attitude within society towards piracy as pirated discs, books, and unauthorized newspapers and periodicals were destroyed in a nationwide crackdown.

"The whole society must promote good faith as its core value... Besides, people must behave in accordance with law and realize that piracy is not only harmful, but also a crime," said Jiang.

"Green Bookmark Action", which started in 2009, is a call to people to refuse piracy and respect innovation under the slogan "Refuse piracy, start with me" and to mark the World Intellectual Property Day.
