BEIJING - China said Tuesday that it expects an upcoming United Nations Security Council meeting will help address the Libyan crisis through political means.

Media reports say that the UN Security Council will hold a meeting in New York on the Libyan situation, initiated by the African Union (AU). The AU will also send a high-level delegation to attend the UN discussions.

"A Chinese delegation headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Zhai Jun will attend the meeting in support of the AU's efforts to seek a political solution to the Libyan issue," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said at a news briefing.

"The Chinese side hopes that the meeting will come to a consensus among the international community and help yield an immediate ceasefire by the parties involved as well as an early political solution to the Libyan issue," he added.
