China, US hold 1st consultations on Asia-Pacific

HONOLULU - China and the United States held their first round of consultations on Asia-Pacific in Hawaii on Saturday, which were hailed by both sides as positive and beneficial.

Co-hosted by Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai and US Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell, the dialogue was conducted in a friendly, candid and constructive atmosphere.

The two sides had in-depth exchanges of their respective views on the general situation of the Asia-Pacific region, their respective policies on the region, bilateral communication and cooperation in the region as well as other regional issues of common concern.

Both sides commended the progress made in bilateral relations since Chinese President Hu Jintao's visit to the United States in January, and reaffirmed their commitment to making continous efforts to build the Sino-US cooperative partnership in line with the consensus reached between Hu and his US counterpart Barack Obama.

The two sides agreed to use the consultation mechanism as a platform to maintain close communication on regional situation and respective policies,strengthen coordination, advance their cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region and play active roles in safeguarding regional peace, stability and prosperity.

Both sides also agreed the next round of consultations would be held at a convenient time.

Established during the third round of the China-US Strategic and Economic Dialogue here (S&ED) on May 9-10, 2011 in Washington, the mechanism of China-US consultations on Asia-Pacific was an important step to materialize the achievements of President Hu's January visit to the United States as well as the consensus reached between the two countries at the latest round of S&ED.

The creation of the mechanism would help usher in a pattern of positive interaction between China and the United States in the Asia-Pacific region so that the two countries could cooperate better to boost the region's stability and development.
