XI'AN - Two people died and two others were injured after the wall of a shopping mall collapsed in Xi'an, the capital of Northwest China's Shaanxi province, on Sunday morning.
The accident happened at around 10 am, when the exterior wall of the Huaqiao Shopping Center, which is located on Xi'an's main downtown shopping street, collapsed.
Rescuers said that four people, including a worker and three passers-by, had been trapped in the rubble.
All of them were pulled out of the debris by Sunday afternoon, and two died in hospitals after medical treatments failed.
A 14-year-old girl, Mawu Ruoyu, suffered minor back injuries and remains hospitalized.
"When I walked past the shopping center, I heard a big noise," she said. "Before I could look up, a pile of stuff falling from above knocked me down. Fortunately, a sign (that had fallen down in the collapse) protected my head."
