CHENGDU - Vice-Premier Hui Liangyu praised the achievements made in post-quake reconstruction in southwest China's Sichuan province, referring to them collectively as a "comprehensive victory."
Hui made the remark while visiting the counties of Wenchuan and Beichuan, as well as other regions that were devastated by an 8.0-magnitude earthquake on May 12, 2008. The earthquake left more than 80,000 people dead or missing in Sichuan and nearby provinces.
During an inspection tour from October 29 to 31, Hui said social and economic development in the region have already surpassed pre-earthquake levels and historic changes have taken place in the region.
He encouraged local residents to strive to build their hometowns into prosperous places and urged local authorities to better manage reconstruction projects and intensify efforts in geological disaster prevention and environmental protection.
Hui also called for more efforts to be made in promoting the development of modern agriculture and rural public services, as well as boosting grain production.
