Schools in SW China to resume classes after floods

GUIYANG - Schools in Wangmo County in Southwest China's Guizhou province will resume classes in days starting Monday  after being forced to close by floods that struck the county a week ago, local authorities said Sunday.

Students from eight schools and a kindergarten in Wangmo will resume classes before June 20, according to Tu Zhangyou, deputy head of the county government.

Another four schools that were severely damaged by the floods will allow their students to start summer vacation ahead of schedule, said Tu.

Floods and subsequent mudslides on June 6 left 21 people dead and 31 missing in Wangmo. Four students and two teachers were among those killed; seven students are missing.

At Wangmo's No 1 Primary School, which will resume classes Monday, sludge and other debris have been cleaned up and sanitation teams have  disinfected the school's campus.

The flood damaged all of the first floor's desks and chairs and left sludge deposits measuring 40 to 60 cm deep, said Guo Zuojing, the school's headmaster.

"We are working to ensure that all of our 2,155 students will have desks and chairs when they come back tomorrow," Guo said.

According to Tu,  in the forthcoming week, health and sanitation workers of the county will daily clean and disinfect the schools where class will be resumed.
