The 2011 Netease Media Awards for Women was held on Feb 20 in Beijing. Ten females in the fields of sports, culture, entertainment and science were awarded the title "annual female role model", including A-lister Jiang Wenli and Wu Juping, who saved a two-year-old girl from falling down 10 floors.
The awards were established by Netease.com Inc in 2007, with the aim of promoting gender equality, and they reflect the progress of the image of Chinese women in the mass media.
Liu Shuwei, one of the winners, is an economics professor and researcher at the Central University of Finance and Economics. In May, she helped to promote the sale of walnuts on a microblog for villagers from a remote mountainous area in Hebei province, so that they could get the money to mend a road.
"Many netizens had delicious walnuts last year. We will set up a network platform to sell farm produce soon, so that it’s convenient to buy fresh agricultural products from all over the country," Liu says.
"Yunnan dances are handed down from one generation to another by ethnic groups. I hope we can continue the tradition," says the winner Yang Liping, a famous dancer, whose peacock dance in the 2012 CCTV Spring Festival Gala turned out to be one of the most popular acts.
