TAIYUAN - A middle school principal in north China's Shanxi Province has been suspended from duty following a boiler explosion that killed one student and injured six other people at the school, local authorities said Saturday.
The Linyi county education bureau has chosen to hold principal Lin Chunyan responsible for the accident in accordance with regulations on responsibility of production safety, according to a county government spokesman.
A steam boiler exploded at 4:10 pm Wednesday at the Chongxiangxi Junior High School in Linyi, leaving a 14-year-old girl dead and wounding five students and a boiler room worker.
Two of the injured students and the worker are receiving medical treatment at a local hospital, while the other injured have already been discharged, the spokesman said.
An initial investigation showed that the boiler was dry at the time of the explosion, which may have led to the incident. Human error has also been suggested, as the injured worker was untrained and acting as a temporary substitute for the school's licensed boiler room worker.
The county launched an 80-day campaign to remove potential safety hazards in schools, chemical plants and roads on Thursday.
