China to host SCO summit in June

BEIJING - The 12th Meeting of the Council of Heads of Member States of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) will be held in Beijing June 6-7.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei made the announcement at a press briefing Wednesday.

President Hu Jintao will chair the meeting, said Hong, adding that leaders from SCO member states and observer countries, as well as guests of China and heads of international organizations will attend the meeting.

How to further improve friendly cooperation among the SCO members given the new circumstances will be discussed at the meeting, according to Hong.

Heads of the SCO members will also exchange views on the current international and regional situation, and map out an overall plan for the future development of the SCO, he said.

The SCO, founded on June 15, 2001, groups China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
