Charity project China Power Fund has received its first 5 million yuan ($790,000) donation from truck maker Sinotruck Group Corp Ltd.
The project, established in July, was launched by the China Weightlifting Association and the China Charity Federation.
The organization supports sports projects for the elderly, children, teenagers, and the disabled. It also funds the promotion of sports programs for the public good.
In some remote areas in China, the construction of sports facilities lags behind other regions, while the selection mechanism for sports talent is still defective. In other poor areas, students lack adequate nutrition and physical exercise, and the disabled have no conditions to exercise.
Some retired athletes also face difficulties. Although the government continuously invests in poor areas, a funding gap still remains and charity funds are badly needed.
“Weightlifting is the embodiment of power, which highlights the strong Olympic spirit. The heavy machinery business operated by Sinotruck is also the embodiment of power, which contributes to China’s ever-changing modernization,” said an official from Sinotruck Group at the donation ceremony.
“The donation is also expected to contribute to public sports theory research and related academic activities,” said, Ma Wenguang, executive director of China Power Fund.
Ma called on enterprises, institutions and individuals to contribute.
