4.9-mag quake hits E China's Yangzhou

BEIJING - A 4.9-magnitude earthquake hit Yangzhou city in east China's Jiangsu province at 8:11 p.m. Friday, said the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).

The epicenter was monitored at 33 degrees north latitude and 119.6 degrees east longitude with a depth of 5 km, which was at the border between the city of Gaoyou and Baoying county in Yangzhou, according to the CENC.

The latest briefing from local authorities said the actual epicenter was at Zhouxiang township in Gaoyou.

No death has been reported so far although four people were lightly injured. The quake has also caused cracks to several residential buildings and toppled a few smoke stacks in Zhouxiang township, according to local authorities.

As of 10:30 p.m., a team led by He Quan, deputy governor of Jiangsu Province, has arrived at the scene to carry out quake-related work.

The quake was also strongly felt in Zhenjiang and Nanjing, capital city of Jiangsu, which is about 100 km away from Yangzhou.

The moderate quake has been followed by 25 aftershocks of up to 3.6-magnitude as of midnight.
