WUHAN - Eight construction workers were injured and another one remained trapped after a furniture market under construction collapsed in Central China's Hubei province Wednesday, company sources confirmed.

The cave-in happened at around 8 am in the underground structure of a planned market for home furnishings and building materials in Qiaokou district of the provincial capital Wuhan.

Eight people were injured after they were pulled from the debris, of whom two were critical, said a source with the furniture market on condition of anonymity.

At least one more worker remained trapped in the rubble and search continued, he said.

A witness surnamed Song, who lives near the construction site, said she felt the tremor when the construction caved in. "It lasted about 10 seconds."

Several residents said they saw more trucks than usual carrying cement to the site Tuesday night, a sign that construction had been accelerated.
