HARBIN - A total of 16 miners were trapped underground after a coal mine in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province was flooded at 11:40 p.m. Saturday, local government said Sunday morning.
When the accident happened at Furuixiang Coal Mine in Qitaihe city, 22 miners were working underground. Six miners managed to escape.
Rescuers said they were laying conduits and installing facilities to pump water out of the pit.
Officials from the city's publicity department said the flooded colliery was a licensed one operated by Furuixiang Coal Co., Ltd.
