Deep magazine, a leading discovery publication in China, launched an initiative on Dec 3 to call for greater attention to global environmental change, such as global warming, glaciers melting and the ozone hole.

The initiative, called Earth Observer Action, has listed five environmentally sensitive places as "he Five Faces of Earth," including the Antarctic and Arctic, the Amazon Rainforest, the Sahara, and the East African Rift Valley, and believes the places are ideal indicators of general global environmental change.

In recent years, more and more Chinese explorers and travelers show up in Antarctica and the Arctic, according to the magazine.

The initiative endeavors to involve scientists, entrepreneurs, explorers, scholars and common travelers to the areas to become an environment observer and activist, instead of only a bystander.

Lady magazine and Deep World, a website on discovery, also joined in launching the initiative. Participants will be able to have their essays and pictures published in Deep and Lady magazines and the Deep World website.
