The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Jilin provincial committee appealed to people to pay attention to soil pollution caused by excessive use of pesticides and fertilizers at the Jilin committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Xinhua News Agency reported on Monday.

Jilin is one of the main granaries of China and is famous for its fertile black soil.

Jia Naixin, a member of Jilin CPPCC, said the province's soil pollution and urban waste and sewage pollution have been increasing year on year in the past decade.

"The use of fertilizers and farm chemicals has doubled in the past decade and soil pollution keeps growing."

Experts suggest prohibiting producing and selling highly toxic pesticides, establishing safe-use standards of pesticides and promoting the use of organic fertilizer.
